*Kindly inform the home collection phlebotomist about your medical history, medications, vitamins or supplements that you’ve been taking.
* Most of the blood tests require 8 to 12 hours of fasting.
A) Blood sample:
Do’s Before a Blood Test:
- Calm down and relax for 10-15 minutes before the withdrawal of the blood.
- Get enough sleep the night before the blood test.
Don’ts Before a Blood Test:
- Do not stop any medication without consulting the doctor.
- Please try and follow your routine schedule prior to blood tests and avoid any unusual activities.
Fasting:
Most of the blood tests require 8 to 12 hours of fasting, depending on the parameters to be tested.
Need for Fasting Before Blood Test:
Fasting is necessary before the Blood Test because the drinks and food in your bloodstream lead to variations in the parameters to be monitored, and this may never let you get the right results for the tests. Moreover, in case you eat or drink anything apart from water, you should inform the same to the phlebotomists or the lab assistant collecting your sample. It will help him to share the condition with the doctor and perform the test with the necessary precautions, if possible, or else shift it to another day.
Tests that Require Fasting Necessarily:
- Fasting Blood Glucose
- Iron Studies
- Kidney Function Test
- Lipid Profile, Vitamin B12, and Others as per the doctor’s recommendations.
B) Urine Sample:
Do’s Before a Tests:
- Freshly voided 10 ml (5 ml minimum) mid-streamurine in a screw capped container. First morning or randomly voided urine sample is suitable for most routine urinalysis.
- Ensure the utilization of a clean container when collecting urine samples.
- When collecting urine samples for a urine culture, use a sterile container.
Don’ts Before a Tests:
- Do not Collect the initial portion of urine followed by obtaining the midstream portion for the urine sample.
- Avoid collecting urine samples in containers intended for chemicals.
C) Stool Sample:
Do’s Before a Tests:
- About 5 gm (3 gm minimum) stool in a leak-proof screw capped container.
- Ensure the utilization of a clean container when collecting stool samples
Don’ts Before a Tests:
- Do not urinate on the specimen.
- Do not use match box or absorbent material.
- For occult blood test – Patient should avoid meat products, pain killers, iron tablets, VitaminC & hard tooth brush for 3 days prior to specimen collection.
- Avoid aspirin and other non-steroidal drugs such as ibuprofen, Vitamin C in excess of 250 mg per day (from all sources, dietary and supplemental), red meat (beef, lamb) including processed meats and liver and fish, raw fruits and vegetables (especially melons, turnips and horseradish, beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, mushrooms.
- Do not perform the test if you have
- Colitis
- Constipation
- Diverticulitis
- Ulcers
- Haemorrhoid flare-ups
- During menses.
