Joint Replacement Surgery

What is it?

Joint replacement surgery is removing a damaged joint and putting in a new one. A joint is where two or more bones come together, like the knee, hip, and shoulder. The surgery is usually done by a doctor called an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Sometimes, the surgeon will not remove the whole joint, but will only replace or fix the damaged parts. The doctor may suggest a joint replacement to improve how you live. Replacing a joint can relieve pain and help you move and feel better.

What are the causes / Indications?

  • Osteoarthritis (OA)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Developmental abnormalities of joint formation
  • Genetic predisposition to abnormal cartilage metabolism
  • Repetitive micro joint injuries
  • Severe trauma to the joint cartilage (cushioning tissue at the end of the bones)
  • Post traumatic arthritis

What are the benefits?

The joint replacement surgery is most successful surgery in the history of Orthopedics. There are two main reasons to have a joint replacement

  • During a hip or knee replacement, a surgeon removes the painful, damaged surfaces of the joint and replaces them with metal implants with plastic inserts. This gets rid of the pain, because the diseased cartilage is removed and replaced.
  • The second reason is to improve joint function after a joint replacement, people can walk more easily. Some may be able to ride a bike or play golf as well.

What are the Risks?

Risk factors can include Medical Risks, Intra-Operative, Immediate, Long Term & Medium Term out of which the most common are as follows :

  • Cardio-pulmonary insufficiency
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Venous Thromboembolism
  • Nerve damage (rarely)
  • Infection
  • Dislocation
  • Loosening of the components: the bond between the bone and the components or the cement may break down or fatigue. As a result the component moves inside the bone, causing pain.
  • Reaction to anaesthesia or other drugs

Is Joint Replacement for You?

Joint replacement may be the right choice if you're in a lot of pain and other treatments haven't helped enough. But you want to be sure the joint is the true source of pain. If you actually have nerve or muscle pain, a joint replacement won't help. Your Orthopaedic Surgeon can tell the difference by doing a careful physical exam and by asking you questions about your pain. Consider a joint replacement "if pain is interfering with how you want to live your life."
